Bastille Band
Named after a medieval fortress/prison significant to the 18th French Revolution, the band Bastille is already established in their homebase of London, England via their chart-topping debut album “Bad Blood.”
They come across as a modern rock band, but their sound is actually a varied mix of synth pop and indie rock. Critics have labeled singer Dan Smith’s lyrics as “poetic,” and the band’s music as “catchy.” Bastille’s performances? “High energy.”
Our ears trace echoes of Coldplay in Bastille’s DNA, most especially in the track “Weight Of Living Pt. II,” with those Chris Martin-esque falsettos and keyboard flourishes. But who doesn’t sound a bit like somebody else, when you have a keyboard in the band and play modern rock?
Dan Smith’s influences are closer to that of director/actor/musician David Lynch. Meaning there’s inherent weirdness in Bastille’s storytelling style and sound. The band even has a song titled “Laura Palmer,” an epic-sounding that references the early 90′s TV series “Twin Peaks,” which Lynch created. Other notable tracks are “Pompeii,” “Flaws,” “Overjoyed,” and “The Things We Lost In The Fire.”
Pinoys weaned on New Wave, Tears For Fears and modern bands like Keane and Coldplay will take to Bastille. Trust London to provide us with another cool band. Cheers!
