Actor Alec Baldwin apologizes for slur, talk show suspended

LOS ANGELES – Actor Alec Baldwin said his late night talk show on cable news network MSNBC will be taken off the air on Friday and next week and apologized for comments that a gay rights group called homophobic epithets. Baldwin, 55, announced the decision in a statement, saying that his comments were ”offensive and unacceptable.” His talk show ”Up Late with Alec Baldwin” began last month.

Yoko Ono debuts peace exhibition in Sydney

SYDNEY – In Yoko Ono’s new exhibition ”War is Over (if you want it)” in Australia, the writer, artist and peace activist hopes to unite people to dream and work towards a better future through art. ”It’s what we can do to change society,” Ono, the widow of Beatles frontman John Lennon, told a news conference at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia in Sydney, where the show opens on Friday and runs until late February.

Singer Chris Brown pleads not guilty to assault that broke man’s nose

WASHINGTON – R&B singer Chris Brown pleaded not guilty on Monday to misdemeanor assault after a fight that broke a man’s nose on Sunday outside a Washington hotel, the latest legal run-in for the Grammy-winner. After spending the night in jail, Brown left the courthouse in a crush of security and press as fans crying ”Chris, Chris” tried to rush the artist. He faces a maximum of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted.

Rocker Lou Reed of Velvet Underground dies at 71


NEW YORK – Lou Reed, the pioneering musician who fronted influential rock band The Velvet Underground in the 1960s and won mainstream acclaim with solo songs ”Walk on the Wild Side” and ”Perfect Day”, died on Sunday aged 71. Reed, whose band fused music and art in collaboration with its early benefactor, pop artist Andy Warhol, died at the Long Island home he shared with his wife, Laurie Anderson, following complications from a liver transplant earlier this year, his literary agent Andrew Wylie said.

LOS ANGELES – The Super Bowl halftime show and a performance during the music industry’s annual Grammy Awards are once again the top venues to maximize a musician’s exposure to consumers, the trade publication Billboard said on Friday.

The National Football League’s February Super Bowl, which draws more than 100 million TV viewers, ranked first in the annual list followed by the Grammy show, music’s biggest night, which features several performances by top music acts.
