Ruru Madrid plays Pepe Smith’s grandson in coming indie flick

The career path of Kapuso talent Ruru Madrid is turning out to be very interesting, indeed.

Despite being a newbie, he was picked to play lead in the acclaimed movie “Bamboo Flowers.”

Soon, he will be seen yet again on the big screen as the grandson of rock legend Pepe Smith’s character in the indie film “Above The Clouds” that’s for submission to the Venice Film Festival.

“Three days na lang po matatapos na ang shooting. Yung mga pantalon ko nga po dun, medyo bitin na (sa tagal bago na-resume ang shoot),” he told Bulletin Entertainment during the visit to “Dormitoryo” set location in Tagaytay.

Shot partly at Mount Pulag, Ruru recalls living in a tent in zero degrees weather.

“Ang lamig at sobrang nipis ng hangin. Nagkasakit nga po ako. Sabi ko sa sarili ko, ‘Minsan lang ako pupunta sa lugar na ito – hirap!’”

Some of the actors that Ruru admire are Christopher De Leon, Phillip Salvador, Robin Padilla, and Cesar Montano. A heavy drama, movie insiders predict the rising actor could win an award for his portrayal in “Above The Clouds,” or at least up his ante as star to own next year, 2014.

Does he see a resemblance to the rock star?

“Kasi nakita po nila yung salita ko na parang malaki, kung magsalita daw, at tsaka kung pumorma, rock n’ roll! Sila po nagsabi (na may resemblance) so ok naman po siguro…”

No Contest

Some starbuilders have noted that given the right projects, Ruru could give Daniel Padilla stiff competition.

“Big star ‘yun at marami na po siyang napatunayan. Eh ako, simpleng tao lang,” he humbly said. “Para sa akin po kasi, ayaw ko pong makipag compete eh, mas gusto ko pong makipag compete sa sarili ko.”

Lucky stars seem to guiding Ruru. Even on “Sunday All Stars,” his group has won several times, with judges praising the star’s performance every so often.

In short, when Ruru is around, he stands out effortlessly. At 15 years old, Ruru is already 5’10” tall and given a few years, he could very well become the man to beat on his network or, well, anywhere else.

But Ruru isn’t thinking about it, but would rather focus on the kind of roles he’d like to play.

“Ako po talaga, simula pa lang po nung bata ako, pangarap ko po talaga is action. But now, hindi pa pwede kasi siyempre bata pa po ako. Siguro kapag nag reach na ako ng 20…”

Will pose sexy?

“Hindi pa naman po maganda ang katawan ko, eh! Someday. Ngayon daw po kasi hindi pa ako puwedeng mag work out kasi tatangkad pa daw po ako.”

‘Dormitoryo’

His series “Dormitoryo” co-starring Enzo Pineda, Lauren Young, Joyce Ching and Wyn Marquez, among others, is on its eight week. He is paired with Lauren Young in the series.

Asked about work on the TV project, Ruru said that he looks at every taping as if it’s his last one.

“Na-e-excite po ako dun. Na-pe-pressure po ako kasi siyempre kailangan kong ibigay yung best ko.”

“Dormitoryo” airs on GMA-7 after “Sunday All Stars.”
