As big winners of UK’s “Britain’s Got Talent” Season 8, the all-male singing group Collabro – comprised by Matt Pagan, Jamie Lambert, Thomas J. Redgrave, Richard Hadfield and Michael Auger – has had a head start in the promotions game, which translated into a major buzz for their debut album “Stars.”
On the album, Collabro sounds like Josh Groban multiplied five times over, riding the crossover pop style that the latter, as well as multinational act Il Divo, Italy’s Il Volo, UK’s Blake, and Japan’s Le Velvets have been known for all these years. Like their more established counterparts, “Stars” sees Collabro taking on well-known musicals such as “Les Misérables,” “Moulin Rouge,” and “West Side Story,” among others.
That’s not to say that the group has got nothing new to offer. On closer listen, Collabro is good at what they do. These young-tenors-in-waiting can actually deliver on musical gems like “Bring Him Home” and “Come What May.” And we’re pretty sure Collabro has been “styled” to appeal to a younger audience that would now be more open to listen to classics like “Somewhere,” and the “Wizard Of Oz” theme “Over The Rainbow.”
The group also took on some newer fare like John Legend’s “All Of Me,” and One Republic’s “Secrets,” both of which, interestingly enough, lent themselves well for an orchestral arrangement – strings, tenor vocals and all. And their take on “Let It Go” from “Frozen” certainly leaves no doubt that Collabro is aiming for the young audience along with listeners of crossover pop. Collabro is One Direction for the dinner show crowd.
