Filipinos praised MJ Lastimosa, the country’s representative to this year’s Miss Universe pageant, for her valiant effort and the difficult feat of a Top 10 finish among 88 contestants.
Only hours after the pageant, MJ wrote on Instagram: “So proud to be a filipino! Man, cant express how grateful i am to everyone! Im filled with love right now! Love you all! Godbless us! Mabuhay!”
In an interview with “TV Patrol,” MJ said, “’Yung performance ko, it’s for you guys. Talagang kayo ’yung reason bakit gusto ko maging the best.”
She may have not brought home the crown but Filipinos readily expressed their support for MJ. Former beauty queens, particularly several Binibining Pilipinas winners, took to Twitter to air their congratulations.
Ariella Arida, Miss Universe 2013 3rd runner-up, who was also present during this year’s competition as online backstage host, assured MJ, “No matter what, you made us all proud!”
On her part, Shamcey Supsup, Miss Universe 2011 3rd runner-up, said she is still proud of MJ for giving her “heart and soul” and making the country “proud.”
Janine Tugonon, Miss Universe 2012, 1st runner-up, “felt deep sadness” over MJ not making it into the pageant’s Top 5.
She was in high spirits prior to the finals. Addressing MJ, she tweeted, “You’ve done ur best and all the hard work. Its time to step back and let God do His work. Enjoy it. I know ul rock this @MJ_Lastimosa ! (love) u!”
Miss Universe 1999 1st runner-up Miriam Quiambao simply congratulated the North Cotabato native. In a previous interview, she predicted that Miss Colombia Paulina Vega, now crowned Miss Universe, would be among those that would give MJ a tough fight.

Others managed to make light of the pageant outcome online.
Venus Raj, Miss Universe 2010, 4th runner-up, jested, “Mag wewelga ako, asan ang hustisya?”
TV host-comedian Vice Ganda congratulated MJ for doing her best, before adding, “Baka po di muna ko makapasok sa Showtime mamaya. May kukulamin lang ako.”
Vice also pointed out how MJ wasn’t able to appear on his talk show before the competition as such, “Di ko napadala ang bertud.”
Socialite Divine Lee compared the outcome to being “nalugi at natalo sa tong-its.”
TV host Lourd de Veyra had a different observation. “More than MJ, mas ninenerbyos ang buong Pilipinas para sa pag-Ingles ni Pacquiao,” he tweeted.
Others turned their attention to the pageant’s question and answer portion.
Ruffa Gutierrez, Miss World 1993 2nd runner-up, described it as “the worst q&A ever.”
She added, “Sayang si @MJ_Lastimosa – I believe she could’ve answered with confidence and flying colors.”
Bianca Gonzalez shared how she misses “refreshing answers like that of Gloria Diaz – hindi yung mga pa-world peace (although we need world peace).”
She also noted the alleged loud boos upon the announcement of Miss Jamaica Kaci Fennell as this year’s 4th runner-up, with many seemingly thinking she should have landed a higher spot.
Topics and hashtags about the Miss Universe pageant also trended locally on the micro-blogging site, including “#MJforMsUniverse,” “#MJAllTheWay” and “Patay TV,” which was meant to reflect how Pinoys might have reacted to MJ’s Top 10 finish.
